Car insurance - Tips & Advice - Green driving – low emissions

CO² emissions produced by the vehicles on our roads are of concern not only because of the effect they have on the environment in global terms, but also because of the levels of immediate air pollution they create in our towns and cities.

According to Transport for London, the UK’s capital has the worst air pollution in the country and among the worst in Europe. Indeed, in London, road transport is the single biggest source of Particulate Matter (PM10) and oxides of Nitrogen (NOX), which are the primary causes of air quality-related health problems, including worsening symptoms of asthma.

This is why in early 2008, after a due period of consultation, London introduced a Low Emission Zone (LEZ), which covers much of the area within the M25 motorway – in order to help reduce emissions.

Put simply, vehicles have to meet European standards for particulate emissions or they will be charged to enter the LEZ – the current fee is £200 per day so there is a big incentive to comply. However, it is generally only diesel-engined lorries, buses, coaches, motor caravans, motorised horseboxes, large vans, minibuses or other specialised vehicles that are liable.

LEZ misconceptions

There are a number of misconceptions about the LEZ and the type of vehicle affected by it. Here are a few things to bear in mind:

  • Cars and motorcycles are not subject to the LEZ in London
  • The LEZ applies across most of Greater London and not just the Congestion Charging Zone
  • The LEZ is aimed at tackling poor air quality not climate change

To find out if you are driving a vehicle that is affected by the LEZ, you should visit the Transport for London website .

Travelling in Europe

Laws in certain European countries regarding emissions are more stringent and are likely to become even more so. If you are considering driving abroad, then it is important that you check what the LEZ regulations are in the country you are going to; otherwise you could find yourself incurring a charge.

It is important to note here that certain countries impose a charge on all diesel vehicles and petrol cars over one tonne – which is going to catch out most domestic cars. In Germany, cities such as Berlin, Dortmund, Hanover, Cologne and Stuttgart already have legislation in place. In certain parts of Italy, all vehicles, including motorcycles, are liable.

If you are travelling into a country where you may be liable, you need to purchase a sticker to show that your vehicle is compliant. You can find out more by visiting the Low Emission Zones in Europe website.

First things first

If you are concerned about the level of emissions your car or vehicle is producing then you should have it checked – speak to a local garage or MOT centre for advice. And you may well want to consider using other methods of transport altogether, particularly when travelling to work.

As well as driving a vehicle that doesn’t impact too heavily on the environment, make sure you are fully covered with Direct Line car insurance .
